The first Basketball Museum in Greece is situated exactly in the spot where in 1919 first hit the ground a ball of basket, when YMCA of Thessaloniki demonstrated and spread the sport in the country. It was founded in 2013, in the context of the project “Youth Mobilization – Cultural Heritage and Athletic Valorization” by the acronym “ΥMC(H)A” part of the “Greece-Bulgaria 2007-2013” Programme. Its main aim is to acquaint guests with the history and the highlights of the sport in Greece. Through the progression of the YMCA Basketball team • you will become acquainted with the history of our sports facilities • you will remember brilliant athletes that were discovered and nurtured by the YMCA • you will admire historic basketball memorabilia • and you will enjoy original interactive games The YMCA is where the past, the present and the future come together. Going through the Museum you will be able to trace the past. The present is obvious due to our athletes and teams that continue the YMCA rich athletic history. And the future lies in the hundreds of young boys and girls who participate in our sports Academies, who are learning the secrets of the sports, and most of all, are taught the ideals and principles of sportsmanship, fair play, healthy competition and the equal development of Mind, Body and Spirit. Towards the goal of preserving historical memory, through this museum, the YMCA honors the unique individuals who served and advocated its principles, values and ideals with enthusiasm, and helped elevate the YMCA to one of the most important cultural and athletic institutions. It all started with Lewis W. Riess who in 1924 , for the first time in Greece, took over the position of the Director of Physical Education at the YMCA and made it his personal mission to teach and promote basketball – and for this reason the Museum is dedicated to him. A great number of visitors (famous basketball players, coaches, members of sport Associations e.t.c.) have already visited its premises that constantly display new memorabilia. Sport educational programs dedicated to school students are daily materialized in the “Mimis Tsikinas” Sports Center under the supervision of specialized coaches-educators. It is of great significance that the museum stands exactly on the spot where for the very first time in Greece a basketball bounced, on the spot where the first makeshift basket was erected.
